The Seven Trumps: Revelation 8:2 - 11:19, the War against Iraq.

Following this are the first six of seven trumps, which are a summary of the phases of combat against Iraq.  Not only are these descriptions appropriate for the current war with Iraq, but they are particularly fitting as the key events which are signature of this particular confrontation.

Trump #1: Describes general warfare with the hail and fire descriptions of modern combat.  Massive bombing attacks akin to the first Gulf War but on a larger scale are perfect fits.

Consider that the land of Iraq is primarily desert.  The only significantly fertile areas of trees and grass are the Euphrates river valley.  These are the areas of civilization as well.  Recent news of the ongoing war in Iraq seems to confirm the appropriateness of the grass and trees being burned up found in Revelation.

Military use of wooded areas in Iraq

It is entirely appropriate for John to describe, as part of a description of modern war, the destruction of trees and other vegetation in that the targets of the air strikes are the Iraqi military vehicles concealed in them.

Trump #2: Describes a nuclear explosion over a large body of water in which many ships are destroyed, the oil in the region forming a slick over the water, and the resultant death of marine life.  This may be something we do to their oil tankers, but it is more likely an attack by the Iraqis against our fleet in the Red Sea or the Mediterranean Sea.  This is a most troubling thought.  We should expect to lose some aircraft carriers and many escorts.

Trump #3:  Describes a missile filled with chemical or biological agents hitting a region's water supply with the resultant carnage.

This is very likely a Scud missile attack.  The target area is not defined for us, but an attack of this nature on Israel would be something we should expect out of Saddam Hussein.

Trump #4:  Smoke from the bombing and possibly from oil derricks ignited by Iraqi troops fill the sky with smoke.

Trump #5:  A missile destroys Saddam Hussein's underground bunkers.  The missile or bomb penetrates the shaft and destroys it.  Abaddon and Apollyon
Coming through the smoke rising from the destroyed bunkers are U.S. helicopters, with their characteristic scorpion's hooked tail, on search and destroy missions against Iraqi troops.

It appears that U.S. helicopters are using chemical weaponry to attack the Iraqi troops.  This seems to be quite an unexpected surprise and uncharacteristic of American battle practice.  However, it might be a punitive measure in response to specific Iraqi units who choose to unleash chemical and biological weapons at us.  Rather than using nerve agents to kill, we might resort to a severe, but non-lethal less-than-in-like-kind punishment such as tear gas, pepper spray, or mace.  The description of the torment we inflict on the Iraqis as like that of scorpion stings is quite fitting.  Tear Gas  The duration of our mission is 5 months.

Trump #6:  The two hundred thousand thousand, or two hundred million, may very well be an incorrect translation.  In the Hebrew language, prominent scholars have established that the word for 1,000 people also is the same word for one well-armed soldier.  The New Testament language may have the same usage, though this is certainly not verified.  My bet is that the correct number of two hundred thousand well-armed troops is appropriate rather than the enormous two hundred million.  This would make sense if the 144,000 ground troops were bolstered up to 200,000 by this time

They are riding on tanks and armored vehicles, which to John looked like armored horses.  His description of tanks is vivid.  They are loosed for war at the Euphrates River on the assault into Baghdad.

It is at this time that a period of 3 1/2 years begins.  During this time, the State of Israel will receive foreign, possibly UN troops for protection.  Considering the Palestinian problem, this is not surprising, nor unexpected.  Two U.S. diplomats or military leaders will be stationed there.  If any country, Iraq in particular, should try to attack Israel, these two ambassadors will call in air strikes to destroy the enemy forays.

I have seen an article which has two Americans being sent to Tel Aviv to work with Israel during this time of crisis.  Once I find the article, I'll print it here. One was a two star general, while the other was a diplomatic type who worked with Donald Rumsfeld.  I'm looking for that article to provide supporting documentation.  I am not saying that these two men are the two I am expecting, but I do believe that these two positions will be assigned at some point for the 3 1/2 year period.

After 3 1/2 years, the Muslim nations will attack Israel in force and eventually capture the city.  This battle is described in great detail in Ezekiel 38:1-17 and Zechariah 14:1-2.

Trump #7:  After 3 1/2 days of captivity, the US will launch a rescuing assault to liberate Jerusalem.  The enemy will be defeated and Jerusalem liberated.  This is recorded also in Ezekiel 38:18 - 39:7 and Zechariah 14:3 - 15.
